[05:59]<+camerongray> Veltas: It gets active at times but is quiet other times
[06:00]<BC_Programming> Java's Installer is a giant piece of garbage
[06:01]<BC_Programming> If it finds a registry key that points to it's version? Error 1602. If it finds a file from it's own version installed? 1602.
[06:01]<BC_Programming> even if the only "installed" file is "classes.jsa" and java is by no rights actually installed
[06:06]<+camerongray> haha yeah, Java on Windows is horiffic
[06:06]<BC_Programming> It is the only thing in our Updater that is constantly having problems
[06:07]<BC_Programming> my favourite is that the uninstaller, when run silently, will refuse to uninstall if it detects that it is installed
[06:07]<BC_Programming> "product already installed" essentially. Uh, yeah, you are an uninstaller
[06:08]<+camerongray> I had an issue the other day with its whole certificate thing - I was running an applet that didn't have a trusted certificate so changed the security level thing to allow it - Wouldn't work, added the site to the allow list - Still wouldn't work, removed site from allow list again - Worked fine for all sites ever since!
[06:08]<+camerongray> I have an old Sun machine where Java is seen as a massive good thing
[06:09]<+camerongray> Has a big sticker on the front "Java Preinstalled"
[06:09]<BC_Programming> I had to workaround the uninstaller problem by literally writing a uninstaller method in the Updater program that deletes all the keys and files
[06:09]<BC_Programming> It would probably work if that classes.jsa wasn't throwing UnauthorizedAccessExceptions
[06:10]<BC_Programming> Updater fails to delete the folder so the java installer finds the folder and goes "Nope" and errors out with 1602
[06:11]<BC_Programming> basically "I can't install because I found this folder which clearly doesn't have a working Java install so I figure I'm already installed"
[06:11]<BC_Programming> User-interactive doesn't have this problem of course, just their crappy silent install

[09:20]<Veltas> camerongray: "have an old Sun machine where Java is seen as a massive" marketing* thing
[09:20]<+camerongray> Haha yeah
[09:21]<Veltas> Also why do you have a Sun machine?
[09:23]<BC_Programming> I suspect Sun truly couldn't see the drawbacks of Java
[09:23]<BC_Programming> iirc he got a Solaris for dirt cheap or possibly free
[09:23]<+camerongray> We have a bunch of them at uni (Ultra 5/Ultra 1) that we need to get rid of so I took a couple :P
[09:24]<+camerongray> So yeah, free
[09:25]<BC_Programming> You did a network boot with those yeah?
[09:25]<Veltas> Drawbacks? As I can tell Java is the best at what it's supposed to do. But I don't use it very much so maybe I'm naive
[09:26]<Veltas> Those Sun machines are interesting, since I've never had any real contact with them and they're different at least
[09:26]<+camerongray> BC_Programming: got the Ultra 5 to boot and install Solaris from CD, would need to netboot the ultra 1 but the framebuffer is bad so will replace that first
[09:27]<+camerongray> I can still use the serial console though
[09:27]<BC_Programming> And what exactly is Java "supposed to do?"
[09:28]<BC_Programming> If it is "Waste developer time with stupid crap" than yes it does a good job.
[09:28]<+camerongray> I don't mind it as a language
[09:28]<BC_Programming> FLOG HIM
[09:29]<+camerongray> I tend to use scripting languages for most stuff though
[09:29]<+camerongray> Perl at work (ugh), Python for my own stuff
[09:30]<Veltas> It's clearly a replacement for COBOL
[09:30]<BC_Programming> I can't tell if that is meant seriously
[09:30]<Veltas> :P
[09:31]<BC_Programming> I tolerate it as a language but only because I have too... also because I couldn't find free Report software that was better than Jasper Reports

[14:35]<Tux2> Hey BC_Programming, how's work going?
[14:36]<BC_Programming> good, how are things for you
[14:36]<Tux2> Okay I guess... I'm ripping apart GriefPrevention at the moment trying to convert it all to use UUID
[14:37]<Tux2> Talk about a pain...
[14:39]<Tux2> There's so much stuff that is expecting a string with the playername in GriefPrevention it's like walking through a minefield...
[14:40]<Tux2> API, backwards compatibility, all that... basically a nightmare
[15:53]<+camerongray> Hey Tux2/BC_Programming
[15:55]<Tux2> Hey camerongray
[16:01]<+camerongray> Got a new toy :D
[16:02]<jamer> ?
[16:02]<BC_Programming> tell
[16:03]<+camerongray> Software defined radio
[16:03]<BC_Programming> oh pah
[16:03]<+camerongray> Basically a £10 USB TV tuner but the actual hardware is an SDR
[16:03]<+camerongray> And an upconverter so I can pick up shortwave on it
[16:03]<BC_Programming> hmm
[16:03]<BC_Programming> I guess that is useful if you want to listen to the radio
[16:04]<+camerongray> haha
[16:04]<+camerongray> I'll really need to wait until I move though so I can put an antenna in the attic - At the moment I have it haphazardly attached to the TV aerial which is completely wrong for the frequencies
[16:04]<+camerongray> But I am able to get some foreign radio
[16:04]<BC_Programming> did I mention I bought a Wii U? so now i have a 3DS and a Wii U, like wtf
[16:04]<+camerongray> haha
[16:05]<BC_Programming> Mario Kart 8 is awesome, not sure how but I seem to really kick butt at Mario Kart online
[16:05]<+camerongray> My friend has a proper SDR set up at the edinburgh hacklab (hackerspace) with antennas on the roof of the very tall building
[16:05]<jamer> BC_Programming is infected with Nintendo
[16:05]<+camerongray> He's had it decoding satellite signals and picking up millitary numbers station
[16:05]<+camerongray> stations*
[16:05]<BC_Programming> and then he disappeared one day
[16:05]<+camerongray> haha
[16:05]<+camerongray> They are pretty scary to listen to
[16:06]<+camerongray> Oh, and North Korean propaganda - That is both terrifying and hilarious at the same time
[16:06]<+camerongray> They broadcast it every hour in different languages - Very easy to pick up
[16:06]<BC_Programming> "leader loves me, Leader loves you, if you disagree then we'll shoot you"
[16:07]<+camerongray> Pretty much
[16:07]<+camerongray> They literally talk about his "achievements"
[16:07]<+camerongray> I'll need to see if I can get it on my setup
[16:07]<+camerongray> My friend's is a bit fancier :P
[16:08]<BC_Programming> "Yesterday dear leader managed to beat his personal high score in Super Mario Bros. praise dear leader"
[16:08]<+camerongray> hehe
[16:08]<+camerongray> The biggest difficulty in picking it up is not what antenna you have or how fancy your setup is, it's whether they can work out how to radio
[16:09]<BC_Programming> lol http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/hungry-kim-jong-un
[16:09]<+camerongray> They constantly manage to broadcast on the same frequency as other stations
[16:09]<+camerongray> haha!
[16:10]<BC_Programming> http://i3.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/285/022/97a.jpg
[16:10]<+camerongray> nice!
[16:10]<+camerongray> One thing I'd like to try is see if I can decode the signals from my electric meter - I could then log power usage and other fancy stuff
[16:12]<+camerongray> I do need some better connectors and cables though - My current setup is put together using mains flex, a stapler, a hammer, electrical tape and some paperclips
[16:17]<jamer> oh so you mean to upgrade to aluminum foil and a old tv antenna ?
[16:18]<+camerongray> haha
[16:18]<BC_Programming> what you need to do is cut off a rabbits ears
[16:18]<BC_Programming> It's an old pastime to put rabbit ears on a TV right?
[16:19]<+camerongray> It does't need much - For shortwave all you need is a big long wire laid out
[16:19]<+camerongray> But I can't really do that in this flat since the walls are so thick and there is so much electrical stuff in the room to cause interference
[16:19]<jamer> camerongray use old cat5
[16:19]<+camerongray> Nah, that's shielded
[16:19]<+camerongray> I'm using mains flex
[16:19]<jamer> oh lol
[16:20]<+camerongray> In the new flat we have an attic so can put it all up there away from other electrical stuff and not surrounded by stone
[16:22]<jamer> I love mods for games :)
[16:25]<jamer> Especially when its a dlc that PC never got

[22:26]<Craig> Hey Tux, and BC_Programming
[22:26]<Craig> How goes it?
[22:27]<Craig> Hahahah I am installing the WinPE ADK in a faster time than that which it takes to transfer a 100GB file from one drive to another.
[22:27]<Craig> :)P
[22:27]<Tux2> Going good, what about you Craig?
[22:28]<Craig> Great so far. :)
[22:28]<Tux2> Ah, nice. :D
[22:30]<Craig> Its actually an extremely simple process... ?
[22:31]<Craig> http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh825109.aspx
[22:32]<Craig> Too bad there wasnt a Fat64 eh? :P
[22:47]<Craig> Hmmm I wonder how long it will take for this WPEInit?
[22:48]<Craig> I have to be at a customers house soon...
